About Us
Woodseats Primary School was last inspected in February 2007. The inspection found the school to be ‘A good school providing good value for money.’
The school is situated in the South West of the city. The school lies alongside the main road through Woodseats in the heart of a busy shopping area. The two, large stone buildings date from the early part of last century with the South building housing the youngest children and the larger, North building housing the older pupils. The grounds consist of large hard-surface playgrounds surrounding the school, with basketball and football pitches, an attractive Nursery courtyard and a retreat area for quieter activities.
The school was built in the first decade of the 20th Century. The infant building was built first with what we now call the junior building being built a couple of years later. Originally they were two separate schools and many years ago they were amalgamated. The junior building contains the offices and staff room, main hall, dining room and ICT suite. In the infant building the classrooms are all on one level and is in effect a one-storey building. The Nursery is in this building with the Reception classes and Year 1 classes. The junior building is a two-storey building with a basement area, which houses the Food Technology room and the music room. This area is also used by ‘Woodies, who run the Breakfast Club, After School Club and Holiday Club.
In the Junior building the younger children are on the ground floor. At present there are two Year 2 classes, two Year 3 classes and one Year 4 class on this floor. The dining room is also situated on this level. The older children are on the second floor with the hall and the ICT suite, which has thirty computers and an interactive whiteboard.
There is a special room for special needs/group work, a multi-purpose hall, a library, a separate dining room as well as sundry stockrooms. Every classroom for Nursery to Year 6 is equipped with an interactive whiteboard.
At lunchtime the Reception children play in their own section of the yard. The infant children (Year 1, Year 2) play in their own part of the yard and the junior children (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6) play on the junior yard to the sides and rear of the North building.
At the moment there are 438 children on roll aged from 4+ to 11. (This includes 52 part-time children in the Nursery). We are a two-form entry school having single age classes throughout. We have fourteen classes from Reception to Year 6. Our standard admission number is 56, though in practice this may vary. The largest classes contain 30, and the smallest two classes contain 24 each. The average class size is 28 and all classes are of mixed ability. Pupils are admitted to the Reception class in September and January and all move to Y1 at the end of the year. All pupils are taught in traditional classrooms by their own teacher for the majority of the time.
