Woodseats Primary School

Extra Curricular

The ‘EXTRA’ Activities programme is a lively and inclusive programme with music making groups, sports and School Council activities to the fore.

In partnership with Ridgeway Music and music tutor Anne Sheehan we continue to provide children an extended range of opportunities to develop their love of music and become instrumentalists. We have two recorder groups and a choir. The introduction to various musical instruments to children in KS2 culminated in a successful ‘Musical Evening’ during the Spring Term when the children performed for their parents and each other.

The choir also responded wonderfully to the invitation to sing at St. John’s Church, Ranmoor along with other choirs. Again there have been very positive comments about the quality of the singing, organisation and behaviour of the choir.

School Council have been meeting and have begun to look at possible improvements to lunchtime procedures amongst other things. The ‘Playground Pals’ project is up and running.

Sporting Achievements: Active Mark Gold

The school aims to provide as wide a variety of sporting opportunities as it can. We are particularly keen to enable children to participate in sport and health related exercise activities irrespective of their ability or previous experience … raising each child’s self esteem and interest levels is our main aim.  The following details show how these aims have been met.

Athletics

Each year we welcome the involvement of Sheffield’s Athletics development Team, entering a range of competitions and activities organised in school and at sports venues around the city. This expert leadership compliments the athletics clubs we are able to run at school which are open to all Year 4, 5 and 6 children. We also enter a large squad of Year 5 and Year 6 children in the Sheffield Schools Sport hall Athletics event and competitions at Woodburn Road and the Don Valley Stadium where we are always represented by athletes qualifying for the City Athletics Finals.

Basketball

Sheffield Sharks Basketball Club have led coaching ‘clinics’ at school and our Basketball Club takes place each week after school in the Autumn term. This year a squad took part in a pre-match coaching session at Ponds Forge and matches against local schools. Not only did they enjoy the experience but represented Woodseats School in a very sporting manner.

Football

Through our football sessions and work with the year 6 squad we are able to help the children improve their basic skills and promote positive attitudes.

Sports ‘Festivals’

One of the most significant areas of participation and enjoyment the school has been a major part of is the local programme of ‘Sports Festivals.’

With partner schools (within the Sports Co-ordinator Programme) we involve children from different year groups in a range of sporting and physical activities. Meeting and playing alongside children from other local schools provides benefits in addition to the development of skills and physical fitness. To date ‘Festivals’ have been held in Rounders, Tag-Rugby, Mini-cricket, Mini-tennis, Dance, Mini-Olympics and Gymnastics.

Sports Co-ordinator Programme

Woodseats School is fortunate to be part of a National programme aimed at enhancing and developing Physical Education and sports in Primary Schools. We are a member of a strong partnership of local schools working together to give the children a solid grounding in P.E. and sport whilst also raising their understanding of the vital place of physical activity within a healthy life style. An additional target for us all is to build on the enthusiasm that is evident in school and raise participation levels still further.
